Does PPF turn yellow over time?
The Yellowing Myth: Why modern PPF stays crystal clear
Polyurethane film is the best solution that can be chosen in 2026. It has a protective layer of multiple layers of a total thickness of 6 to 12 mils (150-300 microns), which offers a high quality of protection against less serious types of damage, depending on the car brand.
But experienced motorists will object: films turn yellow over time, so what can be done about that? Indeed, a 3-5% change in color as a result of operating a car for several years is a completely expected result. However, this is only relevant for types of film that do not include a special protective layer capable of absorbing light.
Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), used as the basis for premium XPEL PPF, is capable of absorbing up to 99% of harmful radiation. It eliminates the cause of yellowing, letting you maintain the original appearance for decades to come. In addition to protecting against color change, this TPU coating helps eliminate defects that appear during use without the need to consult a specialist: when heated, scratches, small dents, and other similar changes are corrected on their own.
Operating Features You Should Be Aware Of
According to research conducted by XPEL, more than 90% of cases of yellowing are caused by material defects or errors made during application. Less than 10% of situations are caused by irresponsible behavior, and the belief that applying a protective film to a car will make it an unstoppable tank.
To maintain the transparency of polyurethane, it is required to avoid prolonged contact with organic matter: bird droppings and tree resin literally “bake” into the structure under the influence of the sun. The acids they contain cause chemical burns to the top layer, leaving an indelible yellow mark even after washing.
There is also major damage due to a high rate of alkali content of non-contact chemicals that are inexpensive. Aggressive compounds destroy the protective layer (Top Coat), making the layer porous and subject to road bitumen. These micropores are covered with dust and reagents, and the film loses its shine and becomes opaque.
You also should not apply waxes containing yellow color and firm pastes that scratch the surface. In order to preserve the factory look, it is enough to apply pH-neutral shampoos and the soft wash products. Recommendations on the care and professional protection of the car body are also provided in the PPF Wrap place in detail.
Specialists will offer a choice of solutions from different manufacturers, and then apply the coating in less than a day. The warranty for the work and materials is 10 years, so if something goes wrong, a solution is always at hand.
